Dental Inlays & Onlays: A Stronger Tooth Restoration

Inlays and onlays are custom dental restorations used when more than half of a tooth’s biting surface is damaged. They provide a stronger, more conservative option than traditional fillings while preserving more of the natural tooth structure.

An inlay repairs damage within the tooth’s cusps, similar to a filling, while an onlay extends over one or more cusps to restore and strengthen the tooth when damage is more extensive.

These restorations are made from porcelain, gold, or composite resin, with porcelain being the most popular due to its natural appearance and durability.

Long-Term Strength with Dental Inlays & Onlays

Unlike traditional fillings that can weaken a tooth, inlays and onlays reinforce the tooth structure and may increase strength by up to 75%. They are highly durable restorations that can last between 10 and 30 years with proper care.

In many cases, onlays are an excellent alternative to full crowns when the damage to a tooth is significant but not severe enough to require complete coverage.

The treatment is usually completed over two visits. During the first visit, the damaged or decayed portion of the tooth is removed and carefully shaped. Impressions are taken and sent to a dental lab to create a custom inlay or onlay. A temporary seal is placed to protect the tooth until your next appointment.

At the second visit, the temporary seal is removed and the restoration is checked for fit and bite accuracy. Once confirmed, it is bonded to the tooth using a high-strength dental resin and polished for a smooth, natural finish.
