Post-Operative Dental Instructions: What to Do After Treatment
To help ensure a smooth recovery and long-lasting results, please follow the care instructions below based on your treatment. These guidelines will help minimize discomfort, protect your dental work, and support proper healing. If you have any questions or concerns, our team is always here to help.
After Cosmetic Reconstruction
Your bite and speech may feel different for a few days as your mouth adjusts. Mild hot and cold sensitivity is normal. Gums may feel sore — rinse with warm salt water 3x daily and use Tylenol or Ibuprofen as needed.
Avoid hard, sticky, or staining foods and smoking. Brush and floss daily, and keep regular cleanings. Wear your night guard or sports mouthguard if applicable.
After Crown & Bridge Appointments
Numbness may last for a few hours — avoid eating or hot liquids until it wears off. Temporary crowns can loosen; if one comes off, call us at 302-658-7200 and bring it with you.
Avoid sticky or hard foods and chew on the opposite side when possible. Brush normally, floss carefully (slide the floss out instead of lifting).
Some sensitivity is normal and should improve after your final crown is placed.
After Tooth Extraction
Bite on gauze for 30–45 minutes to help a blood clot form. Do not rinse, smoke, use straws, or disturb the area for 72 hours.
Expect some swelling and discomfort — use ice packs and take prescribed medications as directed. Resume gentle brushing and flossing after 24 hours.
Call us immediately at 302-658-7200 if you have heavy bleeding, severe pain, or swelling after 2–3 days.
After Composite (White) Fillings
Avoid eating and hot drinks until numbness wears off. Some sensitivity to pressure, hot, and cold is normal for a few days.
You may chew normally once the numbness is gone, as fillings are fully set when you leave.
Contact us at 302-658-7200 if sensitivity worsens or your bite feels uneven.
